John Jarvis

John (JJ) is a technologist from Canada, now naturalised in Britain. Originally a coder, he spent much of his career to date as a system administrator and technology security specialist.

JJ is also a keen privacy and digital rights nerd, and has presented on the subjects as part of international conferences and public consultations on proposed legislation. He has also worked extensively as a facilitator in the special educational needs space, and has moderated many active online communities in his spare time.

JJ came to Big Sister as a father of young children -- aged 7 & 5 -- very much concerned about how to strike the balance between helping them be as similar to their peers as possible (when that means everything to them) and facilitating real harm to them via this always-on connection to the Internet. In Big Sister, as the name suggests, he sees a means of keeping the dialogue open, as tips and suggestions that respect the autonomy and authority of both parent and child, as the latter transitions to a young adult of full agency.
